Student-led event sponsored by the Chair of Spatial Planning & Strategy at the Department of Urbanism, TU Delft University of Technology. The symposium happens once a year and gathers experts, policy-makers, practitioners, and others to discuss informal urbanisation, its political, economic and environmental implications and the tools to tackle it.
In its 2018 edition, Confronting Informality consisted of two parts. First, an international student competition on spatial proposals for and around informal urbanisation was organised. We received 50 submissions from all over the world that included proposals for 29 different cities.
The second part consisted on a series of lectures and presentations around informal urbanisation. Experts from different countries and universities gave the lectures, fostering a discussion on how to improve living conditions in informal settlements while preserving the existing value of communities and creating public goods.
If you want to know more about the event, you may check the article I co-authored together with Asmeeta Das Sharma at Engineering for Change, or have a look at the final report, which includes the competition’s awarded proposals.
